Summary
Colorado is one of 30 states to experience a widespread hepatitis A outbreak. Since the start of the outbreak there have been over 300 reported cases, with almost three out of every four cases requiring hospitalization. In this presentation, state and local public health officials will provide an overview of the current outbreak in Colorado, including hepatitis A epidemiology, clinical management, and appropriate follow-up procedures. Presenters will also review strategies to reduce transmission of the virus and describe state and local public health outbreak responses. This educational seminar is being presented for physicians, nurses, healthcare providers, students, and public health professionals interested in infectious disease, immunization, and outbreak response and management.
Objectives:
Following this seminar, participants should be able to:
• Describe the epidemiology of hepatitis A.
• Discuss management of patients infected with hepatitis A and reporting procedures and protocols.
• Review environmental health considerations related to the hepatitis A outbreak.
• Describe management of outbreak response at the state and local public health levels.
